WhatsApp Rolls Out New Features for Improved Video and Group Calls

WhatsApp has made four major improvements in the WhatsApp video and audio calling to enhance the calling experience for users. The company claims that over 2 billion calls are made daily on their platform. The new calling features are now rolling out for both desktop and mobile users.

WhatsApp has introduced 10 new video call effects, including fun options including puppy ears, taking you underwater, or handing you a microphone for karaoke. Additionally, users will now be able to choose participants from a group for a group call without disturbing others.

The Meta-owned messaging platform has also enhanced the calling experience on desktop by making it easier to start calls, create call links, or dial numbers directly from the Calls tab. Additionally, both desktop and mobile users can now enjoy more reliable calls with improved video quality, featuring higher resolution and clearer visuals for both one-on-one and group calls.

WhatsApp stated, “We’ll continue making improvements to calling on WhatsApp so you can make the best quality, private calls from all around the world. Happy holidays!”

For the unversed, WhatsApp is also rumoured to be developing a new feature to automatically translate chat messages and channel updates, helping its global user base communicate more easily. As per the report, the translation happens entirely on the user’s device using pre-downloaded language packs, ensuring end-to-end encryption. This approach ensures privacy, as no data is sent to cloud servers or shared with third-party services, not even WhatsApp itself.

Additionally, WhatsApp is also reportedly working on a new feature that shows how many participants in a group chat are currently online, providing users with a quick snapshot of who is available.

Previously, the top bar of group chats showed details such as who was typing or had read recent messages. With the latest update, WhatsApp has replaced this with a straightforward online counter that shows how many members are currently active on the app. This change is designed to make group chats more practical, helping users determine the best time to engage with the group.
