Micanor Altes, aka Wa Mikano or Monel Felix, a local gang leader in Haiti’s Wharf Jeremie, executed the worst massacre of Voodoo practitioners in the country. The Altes gang killed over 180 people, mostly aged above 60, who practiced voodoo. The number of victims has not been officially verified. The victims were shot, mutilated, and burned on the streets of Wharf Jeremie.
Reportedly, the slaughter was planned after the gang leader consulted a houngan, voodoo priest who accused the elders of the death of his son via black magic. This is not the first time the gang was involved in violence against the voodoo community. In 2021, the Altes gang murdered 12 elderly women over accusation of witchcraft. According to the National Network for the Defense of Human Rights, since 1986, over 1000 voodoo practitioners have been killed in the country.
The United Nations Human Rights organization has condemned the violence and massacre perpetuated by the gang in Haiti. The UNHCR suggested stemming the flow of arms in countries like Sudan, Myanmar, and Haiti.

Voodoo or Vodou in Haiti emerged from a syncretism between tardional practices of West and Central Africa and Roman Catholicism, which is now followed by a majority of Haitians. There’s an old adage in Haiti that the island county is 85% Catholic, 15% Protestant, and 100% Voodoo.
